SAFEGUARDING HELICOPTER VIEW

The "Safeguarding Helicopter View©" is unique to Smedico Legal. The best ideas are said to be the simplest and we believe this is an example of where this has proved to be the case.

The concept came about as a result of a fabricated induced illness case involving a large family. The children were fairly old and the lifetime chronologies lengthy. We were able to see that for a full appreciation of the environment and the multiple hospital / GP appointments / admissions / and reported ailments; some form of pictorial representation was needed.

With the "Safeguarding Helicopter View©" the following are considered baseline plot identifiers that are placed on a yearly calendar as colour coded symbols indicating the individual member of the family. They are:

Hospital appointment at A&E - HA&E

Hospital appointment - Elective admission Hi

Hospital outpatient appointment - Ho

GP appointment - G

Health visitor home /clinic visit - V

Practice nurse appointment - P

District Nurse visit - D

Midwifery visit - M

(Social worker/case worker visits are represented if requested and we have access to social care records.)

Each presentation of a "new ailment" is designated with an appropriately coloured star relating to the family member.

The Helicopter views are compiled as yearly representations of family healthcare activity. Although they are best represented on A3 charts they can be scaled down to A4 size.

It is through these views that we can best identify patterns that can be associated with social care input, healthcare input and even life events i.e. new child/pregnancy/new partner/family holiday/new location.

They can be especially valuable at CIN or Child/Adult protection meetings where not everyone at the meeting may have had time to read the chronology. In addition the immediate impact of the views in court is obviously useful.

They are also invaluable as a tool to see the extent of past health and social support which is important in, for example, Serious Case Reviews where "Safeguarding Helicopter Views" can visualise activity levels accurately.
